Study Methodology

The Madrid Open University is an educational entity right “at your fingertips” that has for motto “teaching how to learn”.

UDIMA’s methodology is based on a distance teaching system within the framework of the European Higher Education Area and the use of information technologies for knowledge transmission.

Our university’s pedagogical bases are funded in state-of-the-art distance education or e-learning, the concept of educational offer adapted to the social and labour reality, and learning processes based on skills and motivation to learn.

The UDIMA teaching system is closely related to the Knowledge Society.
Our continuous evaluation system and use of technological-pedagogical tools allow us to develop an active methodology that supports our Students to “learn by doing”.

The teaching-learning process is undertaken through the University’s Virtual Classrooms. Our students can establish direct communication with their professor via fora, telephone, and additional data transmission tools that allow real-time communication. Professors acting as “Guides and Facilitators”, detailed academic monitoring, and custom-built teaching characterizes UDIMA as an authentic learning community focused on people.

Syllabus

Each subject has its own syllabus developed by the professor according to the characteristics of the study plan in question and UDIMA’s methodology.

Syllabuses are inside the schedule of educational activities in the Teaching Guide of the Subject as well as in the Virtual Classroom Calendar from the beginning of the academic cycle. This practical information allows the student to personally plan classes, to fulfil learning objectives, and to satisfactorily pass subjects.

Educational contents

The handbooks containing didactic materials associated to the learning process of the different subjects are elaborated by authors renowned in the academic environment.

These contents are significantly supplemented with the possibility of database consultation, bibliographies, and digital libraries of the Virtual Classrooms.

Educational Activities

Subjects associated to the different educational programs comprise a teaching design based on the European Higher Education Area and the University’s own methodological model.

UDIMAs’ learning evaluation system is continuous and based on the completion of different educational activities.

  1. Learning activities: assessment tests based on the collective generation of knowledge.
  2. Self-assessment test: online interactive assessment tests.
  3. Continuous Assessment Activities: hypothesis and practical cases, information search works, execution and submission of reports.
  4. Final Exam: half-yearly on site.

Continuous assessments provide Professor enough information to enhance and guide the learning process helping considerably the student’s academic results.

  • Learning Activities
  • These kind of didactic activities are assessment tests based on the Information Society and the European Higher Education Area. For the development of these activities the acquisition of cross-section skills, such as teamwork, collective generation of knowledge, written and oral expression, and the interaction with the learning contents, the professor and between students are considered.

  • Self-assessment test
  • Each subject entails the completion of online self test-like assessment tests that allows the students prove their acquired knowledge after studying of the corresponding units. These are interactive educational activities that allow the student to know the results in real time thus promoting self-learning and the acquisition of key concepts.

  • Continuous Assessment Activities
  • These didactic activities are pragmatic assessment tests. Practical hypothesis, works based on the research of information, reporting and report presentation are considered as Continuous Assessment Activities.

Students have available different resources in Virtual Classrooms to complete these activities. Such activities could be developed individually and/or in group, depending on the Professor.

  • On site exams
  • The half-yearly final exams are on site and mandatory. This kind of assessment test allows the verification of the fulfilment of learning objectives planned for each subject. The sample of the exams shall be prepared by the professor and approved by Deans or Directors of each Educational Centre.

The onsite exam shall have duration of about one hour and a half, with sitting in the cities of Barcelona, Bilbao, Coruña, Las Palmas, Madrid, Malaga, Sevilla, Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, Valencia and Vigo

The completion of the didactic activities programmed in the Teaching Guide of each Subject will be compulsory for taking the final exam.

If a Student does not take or does not pass the onsite final exam within the ordinary examination call, said Student may retake the exam in the “extraordinary call for examinations” to be held in September. There is only one date for each subject.
