Short description of the Group and objectives:
The group aims to study the human voice as a clinical, functional, acoustic, and biopsychosocial phenomenon, integrating perspectives from speech-language pathology, otorhinolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, physiology, methodological psychology, and health-related technologies.
Its activities focus on researching the voice as a potential biomarker for neurological and systemic diseases; assessing and treating pathological, professional, and artistic voices; and analyzing vocal techniques applied to prevention, rehabilitation, and the optimization of vocal performance.
The group seeks to generate scientific knowledge that can be transferred to clinical, educational, and professional practice through observational studies, validation studies, acoustic and biomechanical voice analysis, applied research involving clinical and professional populations, and the development of evidence-based assessment and intervention protocols.
Investigation lines:
- Voice as a biomarker in neurological, systemic, and rare diseases. Analysis of acoustic, perceptual, functional, and biomechanical voice parameters as potential indicators of neuromotor, respiratory, systemic, or functional disorders.
- Voice as a functional marker in psychology, mental health, and emotional load. Study of the relationship between voice and stress, anxiety, mood, cognitive load, fatigue, emotional regulation, and psychophysiological processes, from a perspective that is complementary to—rather than diagnostic of—clinical and functional assessment.
- Vocal pathology, professional voice, and artistic voice. Research into the prevention, assessment, and treatment of dysphonia, vocal overload, vocal fatigue, and performance issues among spoken-voice and singing professionals.
- Physiology, acoustics, and biomechanics of the spoken and singing voice. Analysis of voice production regarding respiratory, laryngeal, resonance, articulatory, and neuromuscular coordination, with a particular focus on efficiency, vocal load, stability, and adaptation.
- Therapeutic innovation and the transfer of singing techniques to vocal rehabilitation. Evaluation of techniques derived from artistic vocal training applied to voice prevention, treatment, and optimization, analyzing their safety, dosage, and clinical applicability.
- Technology, artificial intelligence, and multimodal voice analysis. Development and validation of voice analysis tools utilizing acoustics, biomechanics, self-reports, clinical perception, artificial intelligence, and digital assessment systems.
- Voice, aging, and functional frailty. Study of vocal changes associated with aging, loss of strength, fatigue, sarcopenia, frailty, and communicative function in adult and elderly populations.
